Why Bamboo

Bamboo is an important crop in India. India has the highest area (13.96 million ha.) under bamboo. India is the second largest producer of bamboo in the world after China. India is second to China in bamboo diversity with 125 indigenous and 11 exotic species. The annual production of bamboo in India is estimated around 14.6 million tons.

Bamboo is a Sustainable Building Material because:

  1. Bamboo grows faster than any other timber product providing an efficient and renewable material source.
  2. Bamboo can sequester 50 tons of CO2 per hectare per year, three times as much as timber.
  3. Bamboo is incredibly resilient; it can grow in depleted soils and hold enormous amounts of water.
  4. Bamboo promotes a Circular Economy by encouraging reuse, recycling, and renewable resource use.
  5. Bamboo can empower rural and tribal communities by creating sustainable income sources.
